Ol' McDonnell Douglas
Because my parents were born to farming families and my dad and two of my brothers did military service, these are subjects with which I have a strong mediated and second-hand familiarity, but no real experience. Living in an area with entrenched agricultural and military presences, I find these subjects in my thoughts frequently and am thus confronted with this "intimate distance" on a daily basis.
In an attempt to approach this idea, this suite of monotype screenprints forces together abstracted illustrations of farm animals, remotely-controlled weapons of war, and decorative elements. I want the final images to be visually seductive and somehow conversational, but also bereft of details that suggest a depth of knowledge or an overtly politicized opinion concerning the subject matter.
